Adoption Consultation

The adoption of a child is a complex process. Prospective parents must acquaint themselves with complicated logistical procedures and profound emotional issues involving lifelong commitments. From time to time, throughout life, adoptive families and their individual members may face unique demands and challenges.

Consultation, offered privately or in small group workshops, is designed to provide prospective adoptive singles and couples with:

  • Guidance in determining if and/or how to adopt
  • An overview of adoption
  • Options and procedures
  • Access to local and national agency information and resources
  • Peer and organizational resources and support services

Adoption Counseling

Families created through adoption face common issues and challenges that evolve along with children's growth and development. Adoption counseling is designed to assist members of the adoptive family with:

  • Adjustment to adoptive family life
  • Bonding and attachment between parents and children
  • Dealing with identity issues of parents and children
  • Managing open relationships (between birth and adoptive families)
  • Addressing issues related to: peer relationships, school, racial and cultural difference, relationships with extended family and community
  • Attention deficit and other nature/ nurture issues
  • Coping with ongoing infertility issues
