Lesbians face the difficult task of developing and sustaining a durable sense of self-esteem in the midst of an often hostile culture. Positive feelings of identity are essential in order that lesbians may survive and flourish at work, in relationships, and in times spent alone.

Lesbian pride does not just "happen" once a certain milestone, like coming out to one's parents, occurs, but is part of a life-long process that requires attention especially at times of great change, such as ending or starting a relationship, starting a new job, or beginning a family. A supportive therapeutic environment enhances lesbians' ability to contend with homophobia in order to face the challenges, and enjoy the pleasures, of being a lesbian.
